Mrs. Firecracker's Place
by Richard Gilewitz
Following one of my performances at a wonderful little room called McDibbs (that is no longer in existence, sadly to say), film director Michael Wadleigh contacted me about composing a piece for a sequel to his award-winning movie Woodstock. His intention was to film it in Black Mountain, North Carolina with the working title, "The Village at the End of the Universe." So utterly flattered with the request and challenge of this assignment, I named the piece before I wrote a single note. On my way back home to Florida, I noticed a billboard advertising Mrs. Firecracker's Place. My instant thought, while thinking of Arlo Guthrie's famed hit, was, "Wow! Who would want to go to Alice's Restaurant when you can go to Mrs. Firecracker's Place!" Unfortunately, the film never happened. The tune did.
